In Mid January my family went on a trip to Miami. I was determined to stay in unique, inspiring places. Well, it ended up being a great idea and really added to the overall fun of the trip! We stayed in 3 places and the last one had some amazing ideas of how to decorate on a budget. Here’s the link to the apartment if anyone is looking for a beautiful place to stay in Miami. I was able to tour a few of the apartments with the owner (thanks Paula!) and got so many good ideas! I thought I would share them with you!
Use cinder blocks to decorate. These are cheap and sturdy. Pretty them up with paint and you have a fun, industrial vibe. They used these as night stands and as a media stand. In the garden an artist had painted some cinder blocks. Pretty much- there so many possibilities with these!
Use a peg board as a head board. Again, customize with paint. I loved the rainbow triangles, but the white headboard was so cute with that yellow bedding too!
Use washi tape as art. Put on your wall in fun geometric shapes and you will have statement art for less than $10. I thought this was a great idea for renters or college students- it will come right off with a blow dryer and some cleaning!
Make your own furniture. In the living room they made two daybeds out of wood. They work as a sofa or 2 extra beds. The coffee table was made from a pallet. You can even write on the top!
Update thrift store furniture. For a console table, they painted it and added stickers to make it an intergalactic theme. I would have never thought to do this, but it was so cute!
Use what you’ve got! I spoke to the owner of the Air BNB and she told me that she made this nightstand out of wood from the garden. They were going to throw it away, but she rescued it and gave it new life.
Re-imagine items. In the garden there were some old chairs with broken seats. These were headed to the dump, but with some paint and wood for the seat, they now serve as unique night stands.
Plants! Plants literally and figuratively add life to your home! They aren’t too expensive but really make things feel more interesting and happy.
Color! Throughout the apartment (and especially on the exterior) color was used very effectively- white walls, and then pops of color with the bedding, furniture, art, and pillows. The white kept everything looking uniform and the color made it fun.
Art! The apartment is located in Wynwood Miami which has a large artist community. The owner let me know that much of the art is original. It is stunning and added to much texture and personality to the rooms. The art is really the only non-budget friendly items in the apartment, but I think it’s totally possible to create art that gives the same effect.
Hopefully you were as inspired by the spaces as I was! Isn’t it fun to see how someone got creative and made a beautiful space?!
